Anyone know of the availability of machined trim from douglas fir? My 80+ YO house has original fir trim. I want to start playing, room by room, and mix some painted and stained trims. Matching the original has proven difficult.
Cherry and in some cases regular pine have been somewhat close for small things, but a large project would need something closer. Any ideas for a similar substitute species? Crown is my #1 priority, plus some chair rail. I figure I could always plane down 2x material if worse comes to it for the flat board stock.
I am most interested in creating a stained version of the picture on pg. 101 of FHB 169 (March, ’05) upper LH corner. “two thirds rule”

Others will probably chime in here and say something similar.
Profiled mouldings are generally not available in doug fir, but there are many sources to which you can send samples or drawings, and have them made in the species of your choice.
And if you have a lot to do, you can do machine them yourself by purchasing something like a Williams and Hussey molder.
It might pay off for you to buy one, do your project, and then turn around and sell it on eBay for almost as much as you paid for it.
But, then, you will probably want to keep it. Who knows?
