These all sound like good responses. Try Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau for confirmation.

I think Beronio Lumber in San Francisco, 415-824-4300 carries "Cedar Breather"

Larry, Cedar breather is by Benjamin Obdyke, check your local lumber yard, not the big retail stores.

Is it common practice to provide for a drainage plane behind cedar shingle siding? If so, how is this done? The house is in the the San Francisco Bay area, so climate is mild but we can get a lot of driving rain this time of year. We are planning to cover the sheathing with #15 asphalt-saturated felt then nail the shingles directly to the sheathing over the felt , using a 5 in exposure for the shingles. Thanks in advance.

*Fred,Thanks for the reply. I've heard about CedarBreather but since we are using "Slate look alike" fiber cement roofing I've not looked into it. (Our fire codes require a Class A roof, and we can't get there with Cedar Shingles unfortunately).Who makes the CedarBreather and how thick is the material? If I understand it correctly, it would be placed over the building felt, then the shingles are nailed over both layers. Our windows which were just ordered have extended jambs, so I can adjust their width for the additional thickness of the CedarBreather. Don't know about the other trim yet.Question, will the Shingles attach solidly to the sheathing if there is a layer of "spongy" material behind them? Thanks.Larry
