I am installing cement fiber siding over tyvek housewrap. The southern exposure of the building gets intense sun in summer and driving rain in winter. I am looking for a material to create a drainage plane between the siding and the housewrap. I have investigated EIFS drainage mat but it seems to be cost prohibitive for what it is, spun plastic. Any suggestions ?

Two Suggestions Ron
First, have you ever seen the fiberglass panels that are used to waterproof foundations?
Second, Have you ever seen the black plastic matrix material that is used under wood shingles when installed over a solid sheathed roof?
I don't know if either of these suggestions will work or the cost effectiveness, but they are just ideas...

Reinhard, I haven't seen the black matrix material how thick is it ? Basically I figure 1/8 to 3/16 will be sufficient to create a drainage plane. The foundation panels sound to thick. Will the black matrix material allow for drainage, the EIFS drainage mat is similar to expanded metal lath for stucco soffits in that it will allow moisture to drain off. Is the black matrix similar ? Thanks for your input it is appreciated. Rob
*Have you considered a ventilated drainage plane ? Furring it out, 1/4 to 3/4 inches, copper screen at the bottom and open to the soffit at the top.

Rob,
The material I'm talking about looks like the same stuff you may have seen in ridge roof vent material also. Tamko is one ridge vent that is made with this material. It looks like the same stuff as in a scotchbrite pad, only black and looser woven. I also am not sure of it's water resistance abilities as it is primarily used for air flow, but it is all synthetic so... Does this help any? Check with your local roofing supplier. It comes in rolls like tar paper.Reinhard
