In my 50 year old house there was a drop ceiling installed in the basement. When I moved in 5 years ago I took it down to get access to the wiring and plumbing, and also removed the wall paneling. Now in an effort to spruce up the house, I am preparing to re-install the paneling and ceiling. The paneling will be easy (I left up the 1×3 stud walls), but I have a question on the drop ceiling…
The previous drop ceiling used fiberglass 2×4 tiles, about 4 inches below the joists. There were two light fixtures (also 2×4, with 4 tubes each). This looked OK, but wasted a lot of precious headroom. Is there another type of ceiling (and light fixture) that can take up less space? If I use 1×1 tiles and 1×1 light fixtures, then they can go right up against the joists. The lights could even be recessed in the cavity between the joists. The only other consideration is that the tiles should be removable without damage if needed. This way I can do more telephone wiring if needed.
