A quick question for all you builder guys.
My BF and I are redecorating our master bedroom. We just got this house and in the corners of the ceiling all the tape was peeling away from the ceiling. My BF has a couple rolls of mesh tape that he thinks we can use to retape the joints.
Is he right? the old tape is paper type stuff. Is it OK to switch?

I prefer to use paper tape in the corners, the mesh does not fold easily and it tends to get caught on the corner of your knife when finishing.
Why is the tape failing, have you looked in the attic for possible water damage.
If you proceed, make sure you use all purpose mud (green bucket) meant for applying tape.

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
Mesh tape does not work well in corners.
ruffmike is right: first step is to determine why the original tape is loose- roof leak? maybe a poor taping job to start with? truss movement?
Anyway, find and fix the cause. Pull the loose tape. Retape with paper tape and regular joint compound.

He can use the mesh tape especially if its just small areas like corners but as was said paper tape holds a crease to follow better.
Just be sure after you scrape out the crumbs to use a damp sponge to get the dust out so the new mud sticks well.
