Hi everyone first time on the coveted hot bed of information. I have a question for all you drywallers. Does anybody have a quick tip on what to do when you have a butt seam (not factory edge). Is there a tool that you can use to simulate the taper for the tape/mud to sit in ???
In my experience I find that where ever there is a butt seam I notice a slight bulge or worse yet crack lines. I’m sortof fussy when it comes to drywall because soon as you add any sort of color to the walls all the imperfections jump out.
Thanks

I just finished a bed room and had a tappered edge and a straight touching each other. First fill in the taper edge, then get mud on straight side paper thin then use drywall tape over both. The trick is to not build up the straight with alot of mud.Second feather out around 8 inches on (both sides),then go to 12 inches both sides.I really did a good job. You can ask my wife. With no lump in the middle.I hope I helped You. Also primer the wall before you paint it, Its helps

Mad,
I cant remember the name of them, but there are prefab, or you can make your own butt hangers.
Basically, you arent supposed to lay a butt seam on the stud. These hangers go behind, in the wall and are deeper than the studs. When you attach the drywall, the butt end dips between 2 studs. You then build the mud out to match the wall.
Another option is to plane down the stud a bit, so that you have a similar situation, or to build the mud out over a greater distance with an 11 or 14 inch bevel trowel... even further if it is bad. Add water to your mud to slick up the skim coats.
Ill try to get the name of the butt hangers.

edit: oh just saw you got your answer in breaktime.
