I’m going to do some drywall patching in a wall that was finished with plaster. What precautions should I take?
Is there a special mud mix?
Do I wet the plaster first?
Is there special techniques?
Thanks in Advance,
Martin

Skim-coating with joint compound covers texture, renews old drywall and plaster, and leaves smooth surfaces ready to paint.

Be prepared to use different thicknesses of drywall in different spots and for some wide feathering. Plaster can be a different thickness from the top to bottom of a door frame and everywhere else in between along the wall. Save the lath for shims as required. Use a good primer like Kilz to get an even color match over teh different wall surfaces.
...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
It is best to paint the plaster edges with a rewettable glue. Plaster suppliers and concrete specialty suppliers have or can get it. It is especially important where the plaster is more crumbly than you'd like it to be. The old hard durabond 90 minute mud mix (brown bag) is also much preferred for the first coats because of its hardness and high adhesion. Gypso-lite or structo-lite are good for filling larger gaps and should be mixed with a water solution containing a little alum to accelerate setting. Reinforce joints, cracks and corners with fiberglass mesh tape.
Thanks Clay and Jeff for your comments and advice. Very Appreciated.
