I am currently finishing my basement and would like to dry wall the ceiling rather than using a drop ceiling. Any ideas on how to drop the ceilng to the same level as the bottom of my ductwork. The ducts are about 10″ deep with the bottom of the ductwork 7’10” above the floor. From the side of the ducts to the wall is about 12′ and I need to bring that area lower. I don’t want to box around the ductwork so any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'd build a 2 x 4 "ladder next to the duct work first. Screw that ladder up next to the ductwork, making sure it's level both ways. From the lowest spot next to the duct work, run 2 x 4's from the ladder to the framed walls....making sure they're level and nail. Frame every 16".
A commercial drywall supplier will have a T-grid system for hanging drywall.

the system suggested by Mike is a nice one,I think they cal iit grid-x. other companies make similar systems.
As an alternative to drywall for the basement ceiling, consider CeilingMax http://www.ceilingmax.com/. It's definitely not as cheap as drywall, but there's no loss of headroom (as with a suspended ceiling) and you can still have accessibility to mechanicals when the need arises.
I picked up CeilingMax at Home Depot, but I'm sure there are similar, and perhaps even better, products out there.
