Anyone know what would cause my mud to spot little brown blotches about the size of a finger tip. Is this a problem?

Where--once you have applied it? or in the bucket? I've had mud develop mold. Nasty. That'd be my guess anyway, whether in the bucket or on the wall.
On the wall? Did you use uncoated steel fasteners that are rusting?
It's on the wall, I used regular drywall screws, one wall is actually glue and friction. I originally thought it was from some metal L moulds that I have surrounding a one piece tub but it's doing it on the opposite wall. The mud Is brand new so I doubt it's mold it almost looks like an oil spot. My thought now is maybee my trowel had a little rust on it that flaked off. Do you think I can just burry this in another coat and let primer take care of it?
I honestly don't know. It still might bleed through. After the last mud you could spot prime with shellac to seal it.
I guess the other thing to do would be to dig out those few spots and fill them with clean mud. Do you know if bathroom paint really makes that big of a differnce?
I haven't tried to cover over stained walls, but in bathrooms I like very much to use Zinsser Mildew Proof Bathroom Paint. It is self priming and in two coats covers beautifully. It's easy to clean after it has dried a few weeks, too. It can be tinted to colors, but you have to obey the directions to reduce the amount of tint because it comes out darker than other paints.
i work for a mold/fire restoration/remodel company. sounds like mold to me as well. i would suggest using a primer by "kilzs premium". it works great and has an antimicrobial property.
my original post was edited but not by me. why?
