drywall on concrete foundation walls
OK, here’s my problem. I need to attach 1/2 drywall to a foundation wall (it’s the wall next to a staircase leading down the basement. I was going to furr it out with furring strips (assumed to be 5/8″ to 3/4″ inch thick). Standard drywall screws are 1-1/4 to 1-5/8 inches long. You’ve got 1/2 drywall and say 3/4″ furring which adds up to 1-1/4 inches. How do you dimple your drywall when the screw is going to bottom out on the concrete wall.
I’ve also heard of something called hat channel, but I don’t know that it will provide any additional depth. Anyway I will get into problems with too much depth, since I will be interfering with the existing steps.
Thanks,
Sherman

use 1" screws
depending on the hat channel to gain 3/8 to 3/4" of depth in 1/8" increments..
If the concrete wall is flat, you can clean the concrete and glue up the drywall.
3/4 inch hat channel and 1" drywall screws if possible.....seems like I've used them in my travels.....
If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
If it's a foundation wall you are much better off gluing up at least 1/2 inch XPS foamboard to the foundation wall before the drywall. Otherwise you are asking for mold and moisture problems (I assume some type of masonry foundation wall?). If the wall is flat and the area is not too large you can glue the drywall to the foam using a PL polyurethane adhesive or another glue with good "grab." Otherwise attach the furring or hat channel over the foamboard.
