I was helping on a room addition. When the new walls were put up they were made even with the outside. After we cut out the old wall to enlarge the room there was a difference of 1/2 to 3/4 inch on the inside. The contractor in charge of the project wants to put drywall over the old drywall using the old as a spacer. He even wants to drywall over the old on the celing.
I don’t like the idea of this I am afraid that it will lead to problems like nail pops later on.

Not to worry if the proper fasteners are used.
Added benefit, should be more quiet and perhaps more burn through protection.

you'd do that even with all that added weight???

WOW!!! What a Ride!
We've put double 5/8 fire rated on home theatres, with res channel under that for sound isolation. What's the big deal with 1/2" on ceiling joists?Quality repairs for your home.

We use rock to rock (extra wide thread) screws and laminate drywall over drywall without any problem. But just in case we use joint compound (spots-bumps ) .. whatever you call it. 24"oc.
On the projects we laminate entire buildings with just joint compound over plaster and few rock to rock screws. No problemo.
I once considered buying the big box discounted drywall sheets, you know the ones the kids scrape with the forklifts, and using them underneath the surface layer to help increase the thermal mass. Quiet things down a bit too, yeah.
Think I'll go build something to try it. Three 1/2 inch layers ought to do.
be eh?
I don't relish the thought of any drywall, but you do what you gotta do.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Done a ton of jobs where we drywalled over drywall. Use drywall adhesive with 1 5/8" drywall screws. No problem with popping. No problem with weight on the joists. Double layer makes better insualtion, sound barrier and fire proofing.
I've used thinner (3/8") over 1/2" drywall with no problems.
I don't think I'd have a problem doubling drywall if the need called for it. James DuHamel

You will be amazed at the amount of sound deadening you will have. I would glue the new layer to the old, and screw it in place. The thing is, if you are planning cable, phone boxes or ceiling lights(cans and fans) DO THEM FIRST before new wall!! I remodeled a master bedroom with 1" drywall plus lath, 5 boxes and ceiling fan!! Fun in the city, nothin' but fun...
