Drywall over existing drywall and popcorn ceiling

Finally getting rid of the popcorn ceiling in our living room. Actually we will be encapulating it. I have not had good luck scraping popcorn ceilings flat, so we knocked down the texture and then will drywall over the existing. This will also give me a chance to run wire for recessed lighting and some accent lighting.
I will be gluing and screwing the new drywall to the existing. The joists are 16″ OC. Do you recommend 3/8 or 1/2 drywall?

No reason to glue at all. I'd go ahead and use the 1/2" in my house.
Better use glue if you're using 3/8.
