Skim-coating with joint compound covers texture, renews old drywall and plaster, and leaves smooth surfaces ready to paint.

I'm not a pro, but how about reducing the number of joints in your layout?
I would think that good framing helps too.

Sounds good to Me ! How about taping techniques?
There seems to be alot of Mystique when it comes to
techniques involving MUD. Just figured I'd throw one out
there, and see what comes back.
Thanks, Mitch.
Two things I do (again, just for my own DIY projects) are:
- taper the butts with a knife. Just cut out a little 45% angle to give the mud some room to fill in and adhere to the two boards better
- pre fill the joints with a stronger hot compound like Durabond 90, then tape over that with regular joint compound once it has cured.
These may classify as messing around, but for my own home I'll take the extra time to try and get a better result. I would also classify these under a little extra preparation will make the work go better later.

I think someone already mentioned this but I think that the hanging has everything to do with having a good looking product ( hanging also relays heavily on the frame but that's another whole can of worms). the fewer seams the better and to go one further the fewer but joints the better.
A good hanger will check framing, make adjustments ( shim, plane ) and hang in a manner to expedite finishing. so I guess the very most important rule is you usually get what you pay for.
Realizing that taping dry wall is not meant to achieve perfection, just a reasonable facsimile thereof.
Don't try to mud over lumps that can be sanded off and don't sand out depressions that can be filled.
As with just about everything else, you get what you PAY for!

I think the most important step is also the most difficult:
Finding a sober drywaller.

Use screws, not nails.

Its way to broad a spectrum to answer in a post , but if I were to pick one ;
It would have to be the butts hands down . I can fix anyhting else I can think of , but if the framing is not right neither will be the drywall. Its interresting that the" butt hanger" has been developed for in my opinion its only to cover the framers butt. I will give my version which id slightly different from previous posts . The reason I answer is because you included "no messing around ". I have remained silent through the tatics of ways to improve a drywall butt joint because if time is no arguement , then the butt hanger ways are no arguement . Usually drywall is all about speed with the best results . When people talk on here about methods , sometimes they lack necesary speed to bring a check home that is adequate in the drywall field.
A good hanger walks in with an 8 ft straight edge. He checks his ceilings with that and a string . A drywaller carries a plumb bob on an unchalked chalk box with the instrument attached to the end of the string. Each wall and ceiling is checked for high and lows and marked as such with red and black crayon. Red is high giving warning , and black is used to settle butts on . If a butt can be attached to a low joist or stud then its a peice of cake finishing the joint. If the joices or studs are the same then its all in a days work to finish and hide butts . Three or four in a straight plane is a good place for a butt. The rule is to stay away from the red !
This plan followed by an exellent taper /finisher is the quickest way to bring home a check that leaves quality work. Of course it all starts with a good framer that picks his straightest lumber for drywall flats. That is also gauged by the quality of the lumber that framer has to pick from . Then texture to hide a bad job certainly can help if things have gotten out of hand .
A quality job must be pre planned by the builder in the framing stages or the drywaller has little luck with the pay disadvantage he has to work with in most cases .

Sorry to take this off track but has anyone wondered why the short edge of a sheet of GWB is not tapered????
PLP
No, but I sure would like to hear what you are thinking. ;-)

hang dry wall hmmm must have many joints lol
As a trimmer, I'd go with hanging as numero uno. Last house I did was for an architect (his own house). He got a real deal, saved him $3K, by importing this hanging crew. I showed up for a walk-thru during their work, and these guys had an electric fry pan full of lard and tortillas sitting on a pile of rock ... you figure it out.
Cursed my way through trimming (hourly, thank God) what with all the stuff cut short, cut long, not screwed off, etc.
I'll never do another job for him without asking who framed it (that was bad too) and who's hanging the rock, so I can adjust my rate.
