I have a client that wants to cover their fireplace structure (common red brick) with sheetrock and then tile around the firebox. Inspector wants a lot done like steel studs 2″ air gap and new brick extension around box. I said how about durock to the firebox and thin coat plaster, much less hassle. Has anyone done this, inspector will not commit, I have to build my case.
