Could anyone provide information as to what a dutchman repair is, particularily as it applies to window frames? Also, I need to know what the terms Abacus and Echinus are as they apply to wood columns. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Can't help with the Dutchman repair ( although if the Dutchman over there are anything like the Dutchman here they'll be tight. Maybe it means a cheap repair. :). The Echinus is the part of the capitol of a Doric colum that sits immediately above the fluting of the column. The Abacus sits on the Echinus.

*A dutchman is a wood patch to repair any broken, marred, missing, rotted spots in a larger piece of wood. The Dutch were known to be frugal,a nd a patch costs less than a replacement.John
*Gary, With regards to a dutchman in window frames, in older double-hung windows with the old sash weights there was a dutchman in each side of the jamb to allow access to the weights in the event the sash cord broke.

Gary, An abacus is the uppermost molding on a capital. An echinus is the lowermost molding on a capital, sometimes made as part of the column. For a picture of what I'm talking about, the plain cove and plain quarter round on the top of a scamozzi is an abacus. The carved egg & dart over a reel & sausage on the bottom of a scamozzi is an echinus. The picture is the second photo on -
