I’m wondering if anyone out there in Finehomebuilding land knows of a electric heating system for the floor that can be installed over a slab and under a laminate floor. I’m thinking of a flat pad of wiring that lays on the slab without having the hot water system of tubes laid into a gypcrete. Something that wires into a circuit but it easy to retrofit in a remodeling situation. Does such a product exsist?

I saw an ad for it in FHB. I'll post the issue and name if I run across it.
*Hey Mose, I dont know if this is what you are looking for, but I know of two products in particular that are a "heat pad" for flooring such as ceramic, stone etc. Don't know if they will work with your laminate.....www.nuheat.comwww.warmlyyours.comGood luck!Donna
*Another great product is from Bask Technologies. They have a very rugged product that should hold up well. The URL is http://www.bask.netLarry
*I don't believe the approach you propose will work well, at all. Whether the heat source is electric or fluid, it needs to be embedded in a conductive mass which will actually do the radiating. If the resistance wires simply lay under the laminate, mostly surrounded by air between the laminate and subfloor, it won't be very effective.I installed the Bask system in a bath under tile on slab with good results. Call the Bask people with your question; they're very helpful, and will tell you if you're on the right track.Clint Searl
*Very good point clint. it would seem that a heating system embedded in conrete (or something similar) and then tiled over with ceramic or stone would conduct your heat best. a laminate would probably act more like an insulator against your heating system and most would be conducted downward through the floor slab.Pete Draganic
