A while back I noticed that when I held some nails in my mouth I got a sensation like that of putting my tongue on a 9 volt battery.
Was that really electricity? Wise guys need not respond.

The production of electric charges by the mere contact of two dissimilar metals …

I think it is a small voltage in the electrolyte of your saliva.
I get that between nails and my gold crown - any dissimilar metals can do it. A penny and a dime together taste different than either one by itself.

I realize that disposal of small change, especially pennies, can be an annoyance, but rather than eat them, couldn't you just put them in those little trays next to the cash registers?
Do you have any fillings?
If so, the acid in your saliva combinde w/ the dissimilar metals turned your mouth into a battery.
As a side note, last weekend I was replacing the 9 volt batteries in my smoke alarms.
I put one of the old ones in my pocket and nearly started myself on fire
Some change in the pocket made the connection on the battery and damn near burnt me. First I thought my sciatica (sp?) was acting up, but it got way too hot very fast.
