I have a 12ft “beam” in my basement that consists of several 2X12’s nailed together. It is also supported by a lolley column in the middle. I’d like to be able to remove the lolley column to make the area more functional. Can any one recommend material to use? I assume steel would work but what are my other options? I believe the builder told me this was a load bearing portion of the house. Thanks for your help!

In order to even guess the beam size, one would have to know the load on it.

Thanks for the note; what I am primarily interested is knowing what types of materials might be suitable (at the appropriate size etc..) to replace this beam. I read an article some time ago in FHB that talked about trusses, and box beams made of 3/4" plywood, and I've seen articles about wooden I-beams. What else should I consider in speaking with the builder?

I bet an engineer would let you laminate u steel two both sides of your existing 2/12 built up beam...then the loads would have to be caught and brought down to new concrete footers....I would think $2500-3000 and you're done.

Ahhh, just kick that thing out of there and see what happens. That's what I've seen homeowners do to get more space for a pool table and cue room. I mean what is the worst that can happen? It'll sag before it breaks, what do you have to lose? Liability insurance paid up? KC

How are the ends supported and how many 2x12s? The max load capacity of the existing beam could be calculated based on SPF unless you can find a grade stamp on the old beam, and then a beam supported only on the ends with at least the same capacity could be specified. For 12', Paralam or LVL would probably be the most practical, you could even get them at Home Depot if you have to. It will probably be 2 to 4 12" x 1 3/4" pieces. Of course end bearing and support will have to be verified and the calculations for the replacement should be checked by a PE or building inspector.

Hi Mike,
SPF stands for Spruce, Pine, Fir. It is the lowest strength framing lumber. Paralam and LVL are engineered wood products made up of many thin pieces of wood bonded together. Since the engineered products don't have knots going all the way thru them, they are much stronger than regular lumber.
