Now it’s time to pick out our roofing on our northerly-facing home. I really like the look and definition of the Elk. I haven’t checked out prices yet. Any comments either way?
Thanks.

I'll take Elk over OC any day

Tell us why.
In addition to what Imerc said about taste...OC had quite a few failures in their shuingles, especially the FG mat one back in the eighties that folks ahd to fight with them over. At the time, i was installing a lot of OC, Buit didn't suffere from bad luck, but I was careful about culling out bad ones and returning them unlaid. Fact is, they manufactured 10 - 20% bad ones that got wrapped and shipped.I was skeptical the first time a customer told me they had chosen ELK shingles the first time. It was a choice they made before I was called to do the estimate, but based on a neighbors use of the product ( the heaviest archy line available at the time) and on the appearance. Long story short, I was impressed and since then have laid many and neer saw a problem with them.To be fair, I know tha tOC has improved its quality control since then

I've used Elk quite a bit as well, however, I think that certainteed is a higher quality shingle than both mentioned. The Owens are quite often not true in size or exposure from shingle to shingle, let alone bundle to bundle and if you apply them in the cold they will easile delaminate. The Elks are nice but are tough to cut and apply in valleys, even when they are warm they don't lay down well to get a straight valley cut. I've never had to take apart an Elk for warranty or blow off but have tried to unstick Owens and they often damage the next shingle.
definetly Elk over beef, goat, venison or sheep too but not cat..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Wife and I decided on upgrading to an architectural shingle after a Hale storm totaled our roof. I usually install Owens corning, last 3 homes, but we went with ELK.
The random architectural series was the best we've seen with ELK. We got compliments from the neighbors and people we had never met. Best upgrade I have ever made. Not sure of the life of the roof, but I know they have a 30 year warranty and we usually move every five or so years.
Our lumber supplier recommended Elk. The one we picked is a metric shingle, thus larger than standard. Having even just a few less shingles to deal with was welcome since we did the roof ourselves, and hand nailed each shingle with 6 nails. That was Elk's spec for a 120 mph wind rating.

Tjhat is everybody's spec for high wind zones.Aren't all Elks metric sized? I agree it is a welcome savings.

Hey Piffin,
Aren't all Elks metric sized?
Could be, I don't know and it's not a bit of information quickly available from Elk's web site.
