Anyone care to comment on the EPA’s Energy Star Homes program? I have checked the EPA site and it seems the program is astoundingly not innovative.
Any experts or claimed experts care to comment?
Don’t our tax dollars pay for these programs?

I peaked once too...Seems like someone playing with grant money and writing lots of words to get a proper word count per dollar.

*Rob,It's like anything else. Energy Star is what you make of it.I'm relatively lucky. The Energy Star program engulfed a small utility sponsered regional program which was actually a good one. The non-profit HERS that promoted and administered the swollowed program handles Energy Star now. They know what they're doing pretty much. The fees generally associated with the technical assistance and testing are paid for by utility grants so I get free help.I get semi-customised marketing help too. There are only 9 "Energy Star" builders listed in my state and none of them very active. I show up at the free 'home buyers' seminars that the Energy Star administrators present, pass out cards and answer questions..... Low key but effective.I seen that big production builders in other states joining the program; probably for one reason - marketing. I can see why many builders would be skeptical of that.My homes exceed Energy Star reqs. I don't have to include anything into the home that will screw it up so it's no cause for concern for me to participate. The books they send out are fairly useless. The M.O.U. you sign to participate in the program essentially says nothing but is there to foster cooperation. You can opt out of the program without any notice and you don't even have to build all your homes to their standards. The Government expects that within something like 10 years that 95% of all new homes will be built as Energy Star homes. I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime I'll work the way I always do and take whatever help I can get for free.It might be worth getting in touch with your local administrating HERS or Energy Star itself.
*FredLAnother sexist error on your part, FredL the acronym HIS is not HERS.Always ready to remind you, your placeGabe
