Went out on my own 5 months ago. I have been working hourly for numerous people making twice what my former boss was paying. However many of the jobs could have been bid. But not knowing the going rate on things made it hard to come up with a number. Does anyone know of a good accurate estimating guide. thanks

and "the going rate" has nothing to do with it.

Sit down and spend many hours reading through the threads here in the bus folder.
You have no idea of the wealth of information (free no less) that is available here.

Read the "Estimating Garages" Thread for starters.

Oh, my gosh! What a great place to send him. He gets an attitude adjustment before he even has a 'tude. He'd best be having a beer while he's reading that thread.
Wine! beer is too gassy.
Snob.
At my age, a lot of things don't work as well as they used to...come to think of it, some things never did work well. I'm going to bed now, where is my warm milk?
I have been doing this 40 years. From my constant estimate misses (even what I have in mind getting done "today", I would advise you to keep working hourly. You could practice your estimating in private (imaginary) and see how you do time wise compared to what you estimate.
Sometimes I hit the estimate but other times the amount I miss would be a problem and you would be pressured to cheapen your work.
Even though you feel you are "barely-making-it", it sounds like you are making it. In my opinion I think you would be much better off to raise your hourly rate instead. You might be surprised how well that goes.
Another thing. I think some people's attitude is completely different in the contract mode. They get on a jihad to see how much they can get, how picky they can be, etc. Just an opinion.
