An old sheetrocker gave me this formula for estimating sheetrock needed on a job. He said “Take your floor square footage and multiply by 3.5 and then divide that by 48 (square footage in a 4×12 sheet) and that should give you how many sheets you need.
Anyone tried this? How accurate is this? Other Formulas?
Additionally, are all areas of the country going thru a sheetrock shortage or just the Georgia area?

Pete,
I have used the method given to you for many years to estimate sheetrock. I have found it to be very accurate. I have never missed a house more than 3% with this method. However, this formula only works with 8' ceilings. Vaulted ceilings, and walls taller than 8' must be accounted for. As to the sheetrock shortage, my understanding is that it is nationwide and particularly bad in areas where activity is extremely high.
