I just finished reading the article on wood I-joists in the most recent issue of FHB, and I ended up feeling like I had just read a lengthy advertisement for I joists in general and Trus-Joist Mcmillan in particular. The virtues of I-joists are lauded in gushing tones, while potential drawbacks are limited to a quick mention at the tail end of the piece. Also, TJIs are the only brand mentioned by name in the body of the article and the listed advantages of TJIs are misleading. For example, the coordinated system of gluelams, lvl rimjoists etc. are mentioned as a specific reason to buy TJIs. But many companies that make them now offer such systems. It is true that other manufactures are listed in sidebar, and Louisiana-Pacific I-joists are used in another comparison. But if I didn’t know much about I-joists, reading this article would have left me with the clear impression that unless I bought TJIs I would be running a bad risk of poor service and questionable quality. Did anyone else notice this? Is FHB in somebody’s pocket? Or am I being a curmudgeon?

Olav - it's entirely possible that the author had more experience with TJIs than other brands. Whenever I read terms like "TJI" or "Skilsaw" I take it as a generic term, even though I know they are name brands. I think even "Sheetrock" is a brand name.
*Jim's probably right, but how would I know, not like I've got my copy YETMAD Dog++++++
*What the hell? There's a new issue? Since the redwood paneling issue?
*You guys should be making curved hand rail for stairs by now.
*Olav, I psoted askig about wood I-joists and after Mad Dog pointed me to the article I called all, I say again all, the manufacturers listed. At all, I first got a answering machine. The only ones I got a call back from were Truss joist Mac. and GP. The GP rep asked "how many units I was building?" and upon the answer of one refered me to a supplier three hours from my home. TJM worked up a framing plan after I faxed the floor plan then sent a engineers Cert,. to me as well. Alo he gave me five different locations to order and offered more. The five were within a five minute drive from my home.If the author had the same response I had I could see why he mentioned a specific brand. Dave
