I am going to put vinyl windows in the house I’m about to build but want to get the best quality I can find. I will use mostly sliders.
Brands that are available in this area are Jeld-Wen, Crestline,
Hurd, Kolbe & Kolbe, Pella, Weathershield and Gerkin. I have used many of the Jeld-Wen (Wenco) 8600 series in rental property and some in my own home. They seem to hold up well (over 10 years on some) and their warranty service has been great. They now have a Premium line which I have not used.
I would appreciate any comments on any of the above windows regarding quality and workmanship, warranty experiences or just why you like a particular brand.
Thanks,
Steve

Greetings 5brown1,
This post to your question will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones eye that can help you with advice.
Cheers
I am planning to use Gerkin for my own home. They came highly recomended to me from a commercial glazer that I hugely respect for his workmanship and standards. In his opinion, several of the major brands have decent stuff but that you end up paying such a premium for their name alone. Gerkin has a decent website and if you pick up the phone to call them a real person answers the phone and they have been nothing but helpful and generous in their time talking to an end-user (me) as opposed only to a dealer.
I have thought about re-sale value and having a flashy name brand window, but I plan on being here for a while myself.

Thanks I'll check them out.

From the Gerkin Website:
Thank you for visiting our web site. At this time, Gerkin Windows and Doors is not equipped to sell via E-Commerce nor do we sell direct to end-users. Please call customer service and we will gladly refer you to a dealer, resolve warranty issues, answer your product questions, or send you additional information.

The word OR means that they will gladly do any of the items listed, one of which is answer product questions, I spoke with Evan George, sales rep for the West. I called 1.800.475.5061. While Gerkin may not want to talk to every Larry, Curly and Mo, I used all of my charisma and professional respect- Evan talked my ear off for 15 minutes about how great their product is and why. Maybe I was a lucky one, I am only relaying my experience and that of another trade professional who has been in the glass business for 40 years. Your post asked for opinions and experiences. At the end of the conversation, Evan did refer me to my local dealer.
The word OR means that they will gladly do any of the yadda yadda yadda ...
Yes ... but my point is that they state clearly on their site that they do not sell to individuals and that is what the original poster was interested in. Nice that you had such a stunning social experience with 'Evan' ... but they don't sell to individuals.
That's all.

I used Jeld-wen on a big renovation job last summer and they were good quality and the best price of 3 quotes. They had an option of vinyl wrapped jamb extentions for the width of the walls I built and it was well worth the additional expense. When it was time to trim the windows weeks later I was ready to fly with casings. I will use them again unless the price goes up.
