Hello,
I am soliciting some advice on pouring a new concrete driveway for my home. I am specifically looking for help in use of exposed aggregates, as well as dyes in the mix. I am familiar with general concrete finishing, but have no experience whatsoever with these added treatments. I have not been able to find a local contractor who does this work, that I could learn from. I would like to do this myself, without hiring a contractor. I am also interested in trade or brand names which others have had good luck with.
Thanks very much,
Tom Flaglor

Hi,
I saw that thread after posting my request. It's interesting, but I'm in need of more basic info. Like company names to look at for supplies or training materials.
Thanks for the help.

Tom,
Unless you going to pour small sections at a time, I would not suggest that you attempt this yourself. Aggrigate pours call for a certain mixture in the slurry. Too wet and it won't set up, too dry and it sets too fast to screed and wipe. I might suggest a brick paver drive set on a concrete base. You can pour the base at your own speed (it doesn't have to be pretty), and then set the pavers in morter in whatever pattern you like. It just seems more DIY friendly. Dyes are added to the surface after the concrete is poured but before it sets, and it takes one of those big trowel machines (I don't know what they are called, but they look like a big fan laid flat on the concrete) to evenly distribute the powdered dye. They do that a lot here in Dallas. I don't want to discourage you, but both methods of concrete finishing that you are considering are not user friendly. Just my opinion.
Good Luck,

*Tom, I agree with GACC. I have helped an expierinced concrete man do a couple of these, and it can get hairy pretty quick. Don't know where you are at, but around here the local pool deck guys do a lot of this sort of stuff.
