Exposed doug fir porch flooring-How do you treat the end piece?
Hey guys,
Just trying to tap into your experience, but I’m having a problem where I have a porch with doug fir T&G flooring. The problem is the gutter above it drips directly on the last piece, which is now rotting.
In trying to replace it, I was wondering what method would work best. I definitely don’t want to top nail it, ans it will cause a problem down the road. Right now, I’m thinking of using liquid nails HD adhesive with a few face (front edge) finish nails. The longest piece I have is 14′ so thinking of using a 2×4 with some cinder blocks to weigh it down until the glue sets up..
So what do you guys think? Am I on the right track? Any recommendations?
Let me know.
Thanks
K

Fix the gutter!
Ha..that'll be an extra..:)
I would treat the lumber with some preservative especially on the end grain. Something like woodlife copper coat would be good to use. I wouldn't just glue down the plank because I wouldn't trust the bond. You could countersink and plug the holes if you're really concerned.

You never mentioned the finish you have on this porch floor.
nor if you coated all sides, ends, cuts etc b/4 you put it down.
All Six sides were coated with a deck stain, that matched the aged stain of the adjacent floor. Will try to face nail with a countersunk screw in the hidden areas, but I think I'm stuck with a weighed down approach for the main entrance since that area will be most visible...
Wish me luck, as I'm doing it this weekend..
Thanks fellas.

Screw and plug.
And again, seal the hole with the titebond III you use for the plug.
I think you're being way to obsessive about not having any exposed fasteners. This is an exterior application, after all. After six months of traffic you won't be able to notice a finish screw or a plug.
