I need to replace some rotting brick mold around my 16×7 garage door opening. Rather than repalcing the brick mold. I’d like to dress it up a little. I was considering 1-by material around the door with a decorative cap.
What width do you guys use when trimming a garage door opening? 1×6 or 1×4 or something else? Is it different top and sides?
When adding a decorative cap such as a bed molding or a small piece of crown at the top what material are you using? The only thing I can find locally is pine. To me it looks like interior stuff. I suppose it might be okay properly primed, painted & flashed. Material thoughts?

You could use azek or koma pvc products. Use 5/4 thickness though. Bed mold and other profiles are available too.

Use the Azek trim. It is made of PVC and comes in many different profiles. I would suggest a 1x6 on the sides and a 1x4 with backband on top. On top of the backband you can put a 1x6 with 5 12 crown. Looks real dressy.

All wood around doors is Spanish cedar - copper cap on top

Yep
Azek
I use 5/4x4 all the way around but that is inexpensive housing.
Better is 5/4x6 on top and 5/4x4 on sides in my opinion
AZEK has numerous profiles and you can do crown or bed with a cap if you want real fancy
