I need to extend the eaves about a foot on a mountain cabin renovation project.
some snow tends to stay on the eaves, so eave strength is an issue.
2″x 8″ eaves/rafter tails are open (no soffits). my thought is to make exterior 5/8 ply + pressure treat 2×8 + another 5/8 ply “U” shaped (looking from above) to slip over the existing rafter tails. I would then use hot galv machine bolts to bolt the ply “wings” to the existing rafter tails. Cover with 1 foot wide roof sheathing, rIce and water sheild(tucked under existing roof felt), drip metal and shingle.
Anybody see problems with this plan?
BTW – this discussion board is great – lots of good knowledge floating around in Fine Homebuilding cyberspace…

Sounds like a plan.
