We just had to make the choice, and after much research and asking around, Sikkens was the clear winner. Just put the 2 part system on the first of our t&g log siding (red pine), color was "light oak". It looks fantastic. P.S. Consumer Reports just did an article last month on deck stains. Sikkens (a slightly different product for decks) was the #1. It is, however, dammed expensive.

"color was light oak" -- does this mean you used a tinted product?

Yes, it is tinted. I just checked and the color is "natural oak", just one tone darker than "natural". There are a bunch of darker tones, all the way down to ebony. This is the Sikkens Cetol 1 and 23 plus two-part system. It is a semi-gloss transparent stain, and makes the red pine just glow with a warm honey look. Just hope it lasts. They recommend recoating with the 23 every 2 years.

Glad it worked out! As i understand it there is a direct relationship between the amount of pigment and the recoat interval. The pigment takes up the UV abuse; this is harder to do in a "clear" finish. I am going to try coating some clear (in a different sense) redwood with clear Superdeck; the samples look pretty nice and I figure I can always change it next year... Most people around here don't know there's a kind of decking wood besides "natural" pt. :)
Thanks for writing back.
