Looked at a job that has a small cantilever deck (hope thats the right term) that has a 3 1/2″ X 15 1/2″ X 16′ beam rotted away. I might be able to go to the Amish and get something cut but I wondered if a manufactured beam would be the way to go and last longer, although this one made it 40 years on a house built under heavy tree cover. Anyway, is it available? DanT

sobriety is the root cause of dementia.
Your situation is not very clear, but if you have an exposed-to-the-weather beam end you can replace it with a Pressure Treated lam beam (usually a special order item), or coat a non-treated exposed beam with a good dose of "green death" (that evil smelling stuff that is an on-site treatment) and then enclose the exposed portion with a custom-made copper flashing.
When I was in industry, some of our office buildings had cantilevered lam beams serving as lookouts under the roof, and when they began to break down, the above was the solution and it served us well.
Here on the Oregon coast, such Architectural daydreams that involve exposed end-grain deserve the death penalty! :-)
Sorry about being unclear. I thought it was perfect but then again I wrote it! LOL.
Thanks for the info its just what I needed. DanT
As I understand it LVL are NOT to be exposed to the elements, you would need something specifically rated for exterior use.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
I have heard that you can get paralam preasure treated. I could be wrong.
