Just about to embark on a project to finish approx. 2000SF of new rough-sawn western red cedar siding and trim. The goal is to come up with a greyish look that resembles pre-weathered (this is a sort of faux barn building).
My trusty painter friend swears by Cabot’s products. Penofin and Sikkens are also available around these parts. My wife has a strong preference for low VOC and anything else that would lend itself to ‘green-ness’.
The material is currently indoors in stickered stacks. Equilibrium MC around here for cedar seems to be about 10% and we’re close to that with most of it. It gets about another two weeks to dry before staining has to start.
What have you used and did you like it?

Just put on a bunch of Australian Timber Oil (Cabot) and it works great...not sure if the clear finish will accomplish what you want...but the product works great!!

Try Cabots bleaching Oil. It is a oil based semi transparent stain. It will acheive what you are looking for. In this part of the states it is used just for that application. Try their website for details.
Does anyone know if there are plans underway to eliminate oil based stains from the marketplace?
