Has anyone ever constructed exterior stucco walls using cinder or concrete block?

I am most interested in what nots to do, but also in what tos.  How about effective ways to color the final finish? 

The prospective client wants the look of a very thick wall with “windows” and wooden shutters; the  three walls will surround a 20′ x 16′ patio area, off their bedroom with access from a new doorway cut into stone veneer.  The goal is a southwestern, mission look.  I am obliged in advance.
