Does anyone have plans on how to add an eyebrow dormer to an old house? We would like to vault a second floor ceiling and install the dormer to allow more light into the master bedroom. A traditional dormer would be too massive for the width of the house. We thought the eyebrow would be a softer look.

How to Install Exterior Window TrimHighlights

I really like eyebrows. There is an FHB article on this reprinted in "Windows and Skylights." The framing looks pretty simple -- actually they made it more so by leaving the rafters in place in the unoccupied attic -- it is the curved trim windows that seemed a bit of a pain. If you order such a window the price will be staggering -- Marvin charges 2.5x for just a curved top window. So make them yourself.
I'm guessing you would build up adjacent rafters as one would for a skylight, plus a knee wall beneath. A large eyebrow would probably have to account for splaying loads by bolting the headers... Just speculation.
Good luck! Great to hear archaic elements are still being used.
