I am looking for thoughts and opinions on the following:
We are finally having our 15 year old house re-stained. It is sided with western red cedar shingles. Over the years, some of the shingles on the south side of the house have become curled. Would it make sense to face nail the curled ones into a flatter position before the stain is applied? What would be more aesthetically pleasing, flattened shingles with exposed nailheads or curled shingles? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

At 15 yrs. They are gonna split if you re-nail them.
If it is just one or two , here and there..I'd try it with Stainless steel nails, just because. But in reality, it often means a trip with the tools to remove the worst offenders and replace them.
I'd venture to say that the old have not been back primed, or treated in any way, and the South side is a bear on wood in any fashion. IF you R&R , be sure to back finish the new pcs.
I hate to venture too far, but you may be better off with a total new re-siding job, alot of variables to ponder, and sometimes it just makes more sense.

If you can nail them without splitting or breaking them, that would probably be OK. You'll know right away with the first few you try. Use stainless steel nails though.
Replacing them is always an option, but new ones next to the old ones makes the old ones look worse.
for siding - you are better off leaving them as is.
