Fastening box newels

cobbleboy | Posted in General Discussion on December 12, 2006 05:45am

Hey all.  Wondering what personel preferences are for fastening box newels to the floor.  Floor is reclaimed heart pine.  Subfloor is 1x diagonal to joists with 5/8 ply on top.  Double 2x10s on stairway opening.  Will be el shaped with two box newels and one return to wall.  Thanks.  Joel

    Greetings cobble,

This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.

Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

    Cheers

Do you have open access to the framing or is the ceiling applied already? Makes a difference in my approach .

Yes, I do have access to the framing underneath the floor.  I know that there a a variety of products on the market for this task, but I was wondering what the personal preferences of people were and why.  I guess that i am little chicken [email protected]# at drilling into my new floor that I have spent so miuch time and money into.  Thanks joel

The only thing I saw on the web site was for solid newels.  This will be be for box newels.  Joel

Haven't used the EZ Mount (Dino's cousin ya think?), but I've made similar. It's pretty easy.Since you can get to the framing from underneath, the job is way easier. If you can you can notch the post around the double joists (I'm assuming here), you make the newel rock solid, and with no visible fasteners.Timber Loc makes a great lag screw for for this. Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"

Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"

God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"

God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but

The next time you see me comin' you better run"

Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"

God says, "Out on Highway 61."

If you are referring to the box newel fastening block , no . But it sure looks like it would work as well as anything I have done.
I make a block like what you showed and run an "all thread" thru it and the joists below , glue the bottom of the block and tighten the "all thread". The premade block eliminates vertical alignment problems with the joist below. I like it.

The last one I did with a hollow boxed newel, I built another box out of 1x that just slipped inside it. The inner box passes through a square hole in the floor and is attached to the framing below.

I did a box newel lately that was 8" X 8", located in the basememt on concrete.

I tapconed a piece of 2 X material that just fit into the newel, PL'd the hell out of it and sliped the newel in place/over it and screwed it down around the perimiter. Screws will be covered by base that get wraped around it.

One other thing I forgot to mention was that I wedged a 2 X 4 vertical above the newel in order to apply presure,  this insured a tight fit when I screwed it to the pad. Solid as a rock!

I've used the thing-a-majigs that IMERC showed you in an earlier post and they work fine too.

    Doug
