Why has there never been any standardization of faucet internals like stems and cartridges. Spent all day looking for a cartridge for a 15 year old faucet.

That's one good reason to keep the manual for any faucet you install -- or a copy for stuff that you install for somebody else.
About 10 years ago I installed a Price Pfister kitchen faucet in one of my apartments. I called CS, and they sent me a new cartridge -- free.
One of the plumbers I work with will kick and scream if he has to install anything other than Delta. He practically has all the schematics memorized by now, and he says Delta generally stocks parts for every faucet they have ever made.

I learned a lesson a little late is you ask me .
I needed a part for a delta kitchen faucet.
So I go looking for one at the local lumber yard that stocks them. I brought in a picture of it and he matched it in his book to a breakdown of that faucet. [been easiar if I had kept the papers]
He orders it through a 1 800 number but says its ME and gives them my address.
I simply asked why he did that ?
He said they wont charge a homeowner anything . The part will be free.

Your best bet is to find a good supplier, like a plumber's parts house. Here in KC we have a store called The Plumber's Friend and they stock parts for many faucets. Makes my job easier and quicker. Bob.
UHM.. Probably for the same reason there isn't any in automobiles, tools and anything else you want to think of.
