I’d like to simulate a woodgrain finish using paint. I know that there are (or used to be) kits available to do this but where I am right now (Chile), these things are hard to find.
Can anyone give me some tips on how to simulate a woodgrain finish using ordinary paints and supplies?
Particularly I’d appreciate help on what kind of paints to use (ie enamel, latex, etc), how to prepare it for use (adding paint thinner or whatever) and how to apply the base coat and grain coat if any special preparations are required.

Thanks Bill, I think what you've provided has given me sufficient ammo to start experimenting without having to re-invent any wheels.
I especially found the last link helpful in as much as it gives a person some idea of what the glazing liquid, or second coating, is made.
