I looked at a slate roof with tree damage yesterday. The owners adjuster has told them they’d pay for a new archy roof instead of repairing the slate.
Since I haven’t used a lot of shingles in the last few years- please let me hear your favorites.
Thank you, Walter
p.s. I won’t be using a gun- heres the underneath of the 1840 deck

Have been happy with some GAF Timberline a few jobs.

We just crossed in the cyberspace- responded to the bridge thread !!
The slateman,
Sounds like he needs to get some legal help.. if the house was insured with slate the insurance company owes them slate as a replacement..
insurance companies do that frequently. Insure at one level and then adjust at another.. it may be as simple as a adjuster trying to make bonus points or it may be a corporate policy.. in either case the added cost of legal representation won't come out of the settlement.. Remeber the first visit to a lawyer is free!
No, it depends on what the policy says.Does it pay for depreciated value or replacement cost?Does it have a disclamer that because of the use of historic materials that are not availalbe or very epensive and that damaged material will be replaced with modern?.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Frenchy,
The roof could be repaired for far less money than the new roof will cost.
The owners want a leak free 35 year roof with no maintainance.
The adjuster has agreed to pay for a new roof so they're getting way more than necessary.
Personally I like G.A.F. I would defiantly stay away from IKO nothing but trouble. I have seen quite a few roofs with these shingles that just did not last.
I see - the owner is manipulating this into a new roof instead of the repair

According to the owners the adjuster offered them the option of new 30 year roof or repairing the slate.
They want the new roof--- I want the slate !!!
customer is always right no matter how wrong they are!

In this case they may be right.
Looking to possibly use these slates on the brick house in the " interesting brick rake" thread for the Penobscot Marine Museum-- just across the Bay from you.
theslateman,
What a win win win situation!
Frenchy,
If it works out as I hope it definately will be.

I agree. The insurer has a reesponsibility to make the owner whole again, less deductable costs

Certainteed shingles are 12" x 36" with a 5" exposure, which makes layout a lot simpler. GAF are 36-15/16" wide and IKO are 13-3/4" x 40-7/8" with a 5-5/8" exposure.

Robert,
I'm aware of the sizes and layout issues, but which do you prefer for serviceability.
With archys you dont have to be concerned with cut outs.
I used Pabco Premier 40 on my house and like them fine. They are very common out this way, which is about as far as one can get from out your way.
In this area both certainteed landmarks and GAF/ELK are metric sized with a 5-5/8 exposure. we will generally snap a line every 11 inches.
typically we now go with the Certainteed landmarks--though for my house I used the " lifetime"/ 50 year Elks---- they are heavier and thicker--both visually and by actual weight.
tamko's i think are still english sized--- and I agree---------avoid the IKO's- I have NEVER been happy with them here.
Best wishes to you walter-- it pains me to see that you are gonna have to slum it like us and use dimensional shingles, LOL--just kidding-- i have every confidence whatever product you use will be a first rate installation
again-best wishes,
stephen
Stephen,
Glad you're back around after a Winter absence.
About the only archy's I use now are when I strip and salvage the slate.
I might use this batch just up the road- check out " interesting brick rake " in the photo thread. The slate on that building are babies, maybe 7"x 9" or so. A tremendous amount of labor to relay them.
Best regards, Walter
Walter -
The way most archy's are graded is 30 year (entry level) and then they go into "Plus" and "Premium" grades which have some kind of basically worthless limited lifetime warranty. They had 30 yr, 40 yr, and 50 yr until recently. I think they have basically eliminated the 40 year shingle.
Then there are the "big" shingles. Certainteed Grand Manor, OC Berkshire, and GAF has one that I can't remember the name of. They have 8'" reveals and have a slate look to them.
My experience is that Certainteed is best, OC second, and GAF a distant third. Elk is now owned by GAF. I liked them, but have limited experience with Elks. I used to use a lot of Tamkos and have never had a warranty problem with them, but the local Tamko dealer doesn't do rooftop delivery and I've used less and less of them lately due to that fact.
Must be a factory specific thing, but all the local roofers hate GAFs. They tend to be inconsistant in height, so it's hard to lay them with pre-snapped lines on the felt. I've heard this is not a problem in other areas. I have more blow-offs with GAFs. They seem to not be as strong and the nails pull thru.http://grantlogan.net/

Grant,
Since this is a slate strip and reshingle I won't need a rooftop delivery anyway-- just use my ladder hoists.
I used to use Iko Chateaus and real good luck with them, but thev've gone to fiberglass mat. Tamkos are available locally as are Certanteed.
I got a few sample boards today to show them and I'll narrow it down a bit.

Never laid eyes on an Iko. The products in your area are coming out of different factories than the ones in mine are. Quality and representation can vary wildly from region to region. IIRC, Piffin has had good luck with GAF's up there, but they suck here.
The Certainteed rep here gives me whatever I want when there's a problem> "What'll it take to keep you and your customer happy?" is the only question he ever asks, but then I buy $100K+ of Certainteed products a year.
I've had to go out of pocket on GAF warranty problems, because the rep will never show up. http://grantlogan.net/

Matt, David, Robert, Grant and everyone,
Thanks for all the responses to my question.
I'm going to meet with the owners this week with some sample boards so they can decide a color and measure up the roof- too snowy the last day there.
Thanks to all.
Walter
I have never had a problem with any of them other than a few delaminations with GAF Timberlines from not enough seal at that headlap joint.
I am cynical and waiting to see how things go with the new line of FG IKOs

One of my local yards still has a lot of Chateaus they bought before the changeover. They're $35 more a sq. than the 30 year Cambridge though.
Not sure how generous the adjuster is yet though.
Hope things are going as well as possible with your DM
