probably. The Fein people themselves will tell you that most of the blades are designed only to run at low speed and the sanding attachments are the only thing you ought to use on high. I've seen blades have a real short lifespan by being forced to try to cut too much or too fast.
In all fairness, I don't know if I'd have believed that when I had just a single speed. Getting a second, variable, is what made me think there was, in fact, a better way.

Most definatly YES!---IMHO of course--Have the very saw you are looking at and I fine tune the speed to the project.
Imagine trying to cut off some in place base nice and square and the saw is at full speed---Now you can imagine how nice it is to take some of the speed off to get you kerf established before you go fulll bore.
I guess by the time you buy the saw , I know not cheap, the varible was well worth it to me.
Just my two cents--now go get one and don't settle for the blow-molded case--get the steel one--
You won't believe how much you will use it once you have it--

If you're going to do it, do it right. And right, in this case, is variable speed.
At least IMHO, LOL.

thanks for the input
I opted for the 400 watt supercut carpers kit.
the hex arbor seemed like a good idea and i wanted to saw a bigger hole in my equipment budget. the machine paid for itself immediately by removing painted vinyl wallpaper in two large bathrooms. we had given up on pulling and scraping by hand. Bought some scraper blades and the paper was gone.
To further widen the budget hole, I got some more cool stuff.
new festool saw to replace old one w/ broken front angle guage.
8" plus guide to replace 2 shorter guides w/ flakey connector.
Straightflex flat and corner tapes. "four times" stronger than paper or mesh.
Straightflex Superbond additive for setting compounds.
Warner No Pock Pro additive for floating compound.
Radius 360 drywall sanding system. Sort of like my PorterCable w/o the weight and the vac. Fastest thing on earth if you can hack the dust.
Purdy ProExtra roller system. bigger diameter roller covers, lighter frame and pole which join w/o screwing. "35% faster" is right.
and smith&wesson tritium watch, sos I can tell time in the dark. half price at Sportsmans Supply.
gotta get to work.
