Fein MultiMaster – variable speed?

ccampbell | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 17, 2004 01:48am

My local tool store had an open warehouse tool show over the weekend and I finally picked up a Fein MultiMaster.  I’d heard lots of good things about them, but never had really researched the tool.  I bought the kit with the metal box and all of the extra blades – $249.  I started looking around on the net for other accessories and saw that there is a variable speed version of the tool, which mine isn’t.  Did I unwittingly buy some old version they were trying to unload?

Do you have a dial on the side at the rear?  That would be your speed control.

edit, I'm sorry campbell, I didn't know they made one speed model.  I have torqued mine down and I can see the need.  I would contact fein and see if they wouldn't do an upgrade..........  If not, and you can't return it, it's probably not the end of the world.

Campbell: The unit you brought is not old or discontinued. its MSX636-2 is a single speed tool Fein used in their holiday promotion with metal box and accessories. The price you paid is great with all the accessories otherwise it would cost you about $589 if you brought all the components separately. If you had the variable speed unit, most of the time you would have the unit turned up to full oscillating speed any way. IMO I don't think the variable speed is going to be used that much. Otherwisw you got yourself a great tool.

I agree about the variable speed.  I bought mine about 5 yrs. ago, and it's one of my favorite, if only occasionally used, tools.

But,  I bought it on a promotion with the variable speed and I've never touched the  variable speed control.

BTW, I paid $189 for the full package.

(But, it's been worth the price twice over with what it's enabled me to do).

in my experience the variable speed is only needed for really delicate sanding, otherwise, you should be fine with the single speed. i love the tool, but the blades are super pricey for how long they last, and only available around my way thru catalogs. undercutting jambs and trim is what i use it for, or cutting out in the middle of a run of base for cabs, and occasional sanding in strange spaces. blades are a little slow on hardwood trim, and if you hit a nail you're sol. i've only had it a few months, but it's already paid me back. in other words, don't worry about the single speed, you've got a fine tool.

I have the VS model, and to tell the truth, I haven't touched that dial since I got it.  Not that I'm offering to trade, or anything...

I went to the woodshow last year and the rep advised me not to buy the VS spped one. He said I'd never use it.

I didn't even realize it had VS until I saw an ad for one, then I thought I got ripped off because I didn't have it, then found out I did.  Not that I've used it at all, lol.  All worked up for something I never use.

Same here, full speed ahead. Only time I ever use variable speed on a tool is when using big cutters in a table-mounted router.

I also dial down the speed on the RO sanders depending on grit and level of finish.  Dial down the router.  But that's about it.  I have the Supersawzall, but it's always maxed out with the finger buried on the trigger.  But I wouldn't buy a tool without VS, even though I might not use it, for some stupid reason, probably because I might need it someday and would curse myself out for not having it.

As someone pointed out earlier, it is a tool that you are glad to have but not something that sees action daily.

I guess that would apply to many tools in our arsenal, but the Fein isn't a giveaway cost-wise and the consumables can break the bank.

For example....I just got mine back from a friend.

Before I even got a chance to put it to use, I wanted him to try it on something he was working on.

Sounds like what my old boss used to say about a Dremel tool. A Dremel tool is the wrong tool for the job. Except when you don't have the right one on hand.

            So true...

That's one tool I've managed to not spend money on.

But that's only because I have my dad's Sears kit from the 1970s that is basically the same thing.

It sure has come in handy more then a few times.

The Multimaster scaping on a piece of sheetmetal may help offset some of that :-)
