This discussion is for my own enlightenment as far all of the sub products that go on all surfaces of a house, under the siding, shingles, etc.
I am adding a large addition on to my existing house. My plans are to use building felt under siding (clapboard) and shingles (3tab asphalt). The crew was surprised that I was not using House wrap, and chastised me for wanting building felt under my roofing.
Are there no analogies between placing something under the roofing and something under the siding? The are all part of the envelope, and are all subject to wind, rain and positive and negative pressures from inside the structure. I suppose that air infiltration is not as problem in the roof assuming that the roof is vented, it is already carrying air form the soft to the ridge. (although there are many here who would not vent a roof, so why not wrap it in house wrap?)

Alan,
I'm a believer in roofing felt for your siding application. Cedar performs best with the ability to breathe, and I think housewrap is more likely to trap moisture behind the cedar than allow it to dry out. It's just an opinion. I don't think the last word will be out on this for quite a few years, but there's really no doubt that the felt works well. It has been time proven.
Do you plan to stain or paint the siding or leave it to weather naturally? Are you in B.C?
I use it under asphalt shingles, as do most of the posters here, but one guy who doesn't has a point: what good does it do if you stick 10,000 nails through it? But, many manufacturers will not warranty the shingles without installing felt, so either it does help or it allows them an "out" on warranty work but I think it must provide some protection. Good felt would self-seal around nails, at least partially, maybe enough to prevent leaks in case of a shingle problem.
Mainly, I use the felt to keep the roof and interior dry before getting all the shingles on...
Nobody puts housewrap on roofs around here. It is incredibly slippery. Do they do it there?
