just wondering what the best type of splice joint anyone would use to extend the trunk of a christmas tree after cutting it too short?

The only proper splice for a tree trunk would be a grafting cut, which is used to graft things like fruit trees to more hardy roots. It looks like a "v." Cut a two-sided bevel on the end of the trunk and the receiving cut on the splice.
On the other hand, what's wrong with a too-short Christmas tree? And why are you just getting it put up three days before Christmas? ;-)
Cut trunk like this "V" and splice like the inverse /. add an aspirin and a wealthy quart of scotch to the 1 oz. of water to the inversee..or inverness.

Hamjob;
Put the tree on a box, maybe 1 foot high and 2 1/2 or three feet wide, whatever is most stable
and place the box on top of a pallet covered with the plywood the same size of the pallett, drape everything with fancy cloth, this will make your tree appear higher, and will make the stack of presents appear larger. Win Win.
