>Flashing a Deck/Rim Connection
I got carried away reading about a sagged roof ridge and posted a question to the wrong group. I guess that’s what happens when you get old.
Now my question: I’m adding a deck to a ranch style house sided with T-111 siding. The siding is about two years old and installed with stainless ring-shanked nails. Rather than cut the siding and bolt a ledger to the sheathing, I’m considering cutting a kerf above the finished height of the decking and installing a “z” bent flashing in the kerf. The flashing will go on the outside of the siding and under the decking. Any comments?
As an alternative, what about bolting the ledger through the siding to the rim joist and holding the deck ledger away from the wall with galvanized washers? That way any moisture will stay on the outside of the siding where it belongs. Our local building dept. doesn’t specify any flashing and the approved plans don’t include any, either. Generally the inspectors look to industry practices, but I’m a lot more familiar with drywall than decks.
Suggestions or comments? Thanks.

I need to get a copy of the article "HOW TO AVOID COMMON FLASHING ERRORS" that was published in FH issue 115. The reason I need this is to use at our local Habitat for Humanity site to get the "volunteers" to do a good job of flashing the current house as described in the article. I had FH edition 115 but can't find it any more. If someone could fax it to me, or scan it and e-mail it to me I would really appreciate it. You can contact me via E-mail. You can get my E-mail address by clicking on my name, above.
Thanks Much
*Matt, I'll send it (email) to you in a .tif format. It gives a better image than jpeg for small sized files. Let me know if you can open and view it. If not, I'll either do jpeg or fax it to you.Mongo
*I got what I needed. Thanks very Mongo et al for your help.

*Gary:Have you considered building a free standing deck that would sit up next to the house? Then you would not need to worry about water infiltration into the house. Do a BT search on "deck ledger flashing" or similar. Attaching decks to houses has been discussed here several times, including your idea about leaving drainage space between the house and deck. You may want to call your local inspections department and ask about the requirement for flashing where decks are attached to houses. I would be pretty surprised if flashing is not required, assuming that the siding is "opened up". If you do "cut a kerf" in the siding, be sure to paint/stain the raw wood edges before covering it up with flashing.
