I’m drawing plans for a new home, and I need a steel beam(running through the center of the home) to carry 2×10 floor joists, spanning 13’6″, two story home, 40lb. live load, 10lb. dead load. Roof will be trussed, so no second story ceiling load is transfered.
I built one a few years ago that carried 18′ floor joists using a 10″ 22lb. I-beam. I should add that I would like 15′ between columns. Is this same beam overkill for this situation? And if it is could I possibly push my columns to 19′?
Thanks, John

JRS - I took the classes in grad school and have the books and tables to do this but I think you should really contact a structural engineer. This is a simple problem (usually) and an engineer can provide a stamped sketch that will be a great help if you ever have a problem. Shouldn't cost much - $100-200. Cheap peace of mind.
*...JRS... i don't have my tables here.. but if you call your steel fabricator.. they can run this off no problem and probably no charge...
