filling in old rebar holes – what to use?
Hi all:
I had a concrete slab removed from the rear of my home. The slab was rebarred into the foundation wall (just under a cantilever area) and when the conrete was removed, either the rebar pulled out along with it, or remained in the wall and the contractor cut of the ends (leaving the stubs still in the wall. I’m going to have a brick patio installed and am wondering what (if anything) I should do with the holes left behind by the rebar that pulled out. Some of the holes are quite deep (several inches). They don’t seem to extend all the way through the wall, but I’m worried about moisture getting into the holes after dirt is backfilled into this area and maybe doing some freeze, thaw, expansion damage. I’ve already put some Henry foundation damp proofing on the foundation wall that was previously butted up against the slab (I basically extended the damproofing up from where the builder left off), and slathered a bunch of the damproofing into the holes after I cleaned them out.
Is this sufficient? I suppose I maybe should have used some patching concrete to fill in the holes first and then damproofed. Is it OK as is now, should I pump some polyurethane caulking into the holes, or what? Any help is of course appreciated.
Thanks gang

Well, I would have cleaned out the holes and stuffed them with some sort of mortar mix before applying the tar stuff. A little hard to do now, unless you have a drill that can clean out the holes.
You can probably fill the holes with caulk, and that should suffice.
