I am hoping to repair a corroded and leaking joint on a sprinkler system that uses 2″ black iron pipe. Instead of the usual threaded fittings, each joint is clamped with two heavy semicircular rings. Anybody out there familiar with this. I’ve seen these fittings in sprinkler systems in big buildings yet, I’ve never seen these fittings in plumbing supply houses. How do they work? Where are they available.

*They are quite simple. Once you purchase one from a local plumbing supplier or on line, you will understand how it goes together. Are you at all familiar with what is involved in shutting down the system while you make the repair ? Most systems are tied into central fire alarms that are activated by water flow or pressure fluctuations. How about the drain down ? The refill ? Do you have serious liability insurance ? Who is responsible for the building while you have the system shut down ? Do you want all this responsiblity ?
*Tim:Good points. I have hired professional sprinkler people before and they were very reasonable. At the same time it would be a good idea to have them drain and check the system. In my area it is supposed to be done annually.
