I bought a balloon type fireplace plug that installs below the damper. Long story short……not so good. Anybody have any better solutions? Next step is to build a frame with a plexiglass panel that will go over the glass door screen. Not sure how well this will work. We don’t use the fireplace. I was thinking of stuffing a foam pillow up against the damper.

You will be best served by matching your solution to your specific installation.
I found this on amazon with a quick google search.
One question only you can answer is how permanent you want this closure to be.
Thank You. Looks like a good solution. I'd detach the damper handle, which looks like the best soultion for me, just hope the work is worth it.
I have a similar situation in my home. Balloon worked ok, but not great. The easy option is to seal off at the top and place a clear warning in the fireplace stating not to use. We ended up having a piece of bluestone placed over the flue. I am pretty sure I read this idea on FHB or GBA.
