Fireplace Hearth – Advice Needed
I need some advice on a hearth I am constructing for a fireplace refacing.
I built a framework out of 3 5/8″ steel studs on edge, spaced 12″ O.C. I then topped that with 1/2″ Durock cement board. (According to my supplier, this would be fine.)
I will be installing 1/2″ travertine on top of this. But, it seems too spongy. I am afraid that the tile will crack the first time someone steps on it.
So, what can I do to firm this up? If I need to, I will remove the cement board, and fill in underneath with a masonry product. I would rather not do that if there is a way I can stiffen it without adding very much in thickness.
Thanks!

I think you need a layer of 3/4" plywood beneath the durock. That will provide the stiffness you need. A layer of Durock, by itself, is not a structural material.
If it's a hearth that needs to be made out of fireproof material then you don't want any plywood. As for sponginess - just add some additional steel studs or double up the durarock. What you've built is a common way to make them.
I now have a solid hearth.
Thanks, Don, for the advice.
I added a second layer of 1/2" Durock cement board, securing it to the first layer with thinset, and it made it solid.
I'm glad that worked out.
