has anyone here ever tiled right over old brick on fireplace with ceramic tiles?
more importantly does ceramic tile have problems with fire? i.e explode when its to hot? i really dont like the old face and would like to go over it with ceramic tiles with no backer if possble.

Just clean the brick real well. Tile will stick, no problem. Use thinset, not glue.
I doubt youre going to get a fire THAT hot to crack tile. I used marble all around the face in a past house and had no problems and thats SOFT! Lived there more'n ten years with the green marble. Even the raised hearth I did in two big pieces.

Yeah, I did the same thing - marble and thinset. I ran a wood stove in there pretty hot for years with no problem
I think there's something on this in Michael Byrne's book "Setting Tile". I would be surprised if he recommends tiling right over brick, but it's possible. There's a great tile forum at johnbridge.com.
