We have a late 70’s prefab Majestic firebox that was added to our 1962 built home. The wall around the fireplace is a “prefab” stone (it had various molds and colorations that we selected at the time). It has long Pella windows on either side as well as built in bookcases.
We feel the appearance of the stone is out of date and would like to modernize it. Our family room is wood paneled and the room is fairly traditional (eclectic too) in personality.
What can be done? I saw on an old brick fireplace in the latest magazine edition on page 46 – a technique described as a “cement skim coat”. That technique cannot work for me as my fireplace wall in irregular with stone shapes grouted. Although the idea of a plain wall with a mantel could work, I think.
I’d like not to do anything that is extremely messy or expensive. What are my alternatives??

You could take the stone down and put up different stone. Or trim it out in something that matches the room.
Heres a before and after we just did. I thought it would look nice if they put the "stacked" stone that is under the mantle, on the wall above the mantle too.
